Lisa Sharpe Elles is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Chemistry Department at the University of Kansas. Her love of chemistry started as a young 4-H kid learning how to cook, bake, and preserve foods for her fair projects. As much as possible, she spent time trying new recipes and wondering about why certain ingredients are important. In chemistry classes she began to learn and see new connections to cooking that gave her the courage to experiment even further in the kitchen. She has learned a lot through her experiences and research and has found that sharing this knowledge with others is one of her favorite things to do. She will teach you about the four food molecules and how they are involved in some of your favorite foods such as ice cream, pasta, pizza, and cheese. By knowing a little chemistry about these foods, you can have success in the kitchen with recipes you may have never tried before. Lisa previously taught culinary classes at The Culinary Center of Kansas City. We welcome her to Cookshop on 8th. The fire extinguishers are fully charged!

Chef Cynthia Tiscareno Childers was born a natural cook. Few are lucky this way. Her father, an immigrant from Mexico, was a magician in the kitchen. Cynthia inherited his gift and attentively learned the family’s delicious and authentic recipes. Her father gifted her his heirloom copper pot to her to cook carnitas traditionally over a wood fire. Cynthia cooks possibly the best carnitas you have ever tasted. For me they are. Let’s pray she can get that pot through TSA. Cynthia’s cooking is legendary in the foothills of Northern California where we first met. Her tamales are among some of the best that I have ever tasted. Her techniques helped me up my tamale game. My husband told me he almost left me for her frijoles. Fortunately, the beautiful Cynthia, was happily married, and graciously taught me how to cook frijoles on her level. Cynthia and her lovely daughter, Sharly, who was chef at Renwood Winery, catered many events. Cynthia was my Co-Chef at Vendage & Co. catering where we fed up to 3,000 at the Amador 4 Fires for 4 years and were always voted in the top 2 food booths amongst many. She and I catered so many winery functions and weddings together from Lake Tahoe to Sonoma it’s dizzying for me to remember. Cynthia was my right hand. She’s smart, fun, quick to solve problems and gets the job done naturally in the kitchen. By choice she prefers to eat vegetarian. Book the ultimate vegetarian Mexican and non-vegetarian Mexican classes whenever my Latina bestie is in town.
